What is MBA in Supply Chain Management?

Answering this question begins by defining what is Supply Chain Management (SCM).

Think of the entire chain that all goods and services go through. From being raw materials to being processed and stored, all the way to reaching the consumer. The cost of the final product keeps increasing every step of the way. But, by streamlining all the supply-side activities, one can maximize the value of the product and present it to the customer at a competitive advantage.

A good SCM involves balancing costs, and delivering quickly and effectively while maintaining or improving upon the quality of the product or service. So, SCM involves five key areas:

  • Strategy
  • Sourcing raw materials
  • Production
  • Distribution
  • Cost and risk control

When these five segments of a business work together in tandem, efficiency can be reached. An MBA in Supply Chain Management teaches you this streamlining process and quality management. It gives you all the skills needed to design, develop and implement supply chain operations that will boost your organization.

Especially in today’s globalized world, supply chains are not limited geographically also. To this, you add automation, international regulations, and the sheer volume of players in the game. Managing this requires people with specialized skill sets who are well-versed in logistics, problem-solving, operations, and analysis. Since this process in itself is a multidisciplinary aspect of business, the MBA degree program specializing in SCM is also a multi-discipline course that includes international logistics, statistics, data analysis, demand management, and so on.

The course, typically like any MBA course, is two years long. It can either be a specialized degree or an elective you can choose in the traditional MBA program.
