The cost of study in Switzerland is low as compared to other European countries because the education system is usually public-funded. With low cost of study and a high standard of living, it is undoubtedly one of the best study destinations in Europe. It is interesting to note that the cost of living is lower as compared to other European countries.

Since Switzerland is a tourism hub of Europe, Hospitality Management is one of the most popular areas of study in the country and attracts students from all over the world.

An average tuition fee per year can range anywhere from 15000 Swiss Francs to 43000 Swiss Francs. However, in some universities, the cost may be a bit higher for the international students. The cost of a university application would usually be between 50 - 250 Swiss Francs. It is important for a student to prove the financial ability to support himself while studying in Switzerland.

The tuition fees would usually depend on the university chosen, however the average tuition fees per year for different courses is as follows:

  • Diploma courses : 17000- 19000 Swiss Francs
  • Bachelors courses : 6000 - 24000 Swiss Francs
  • MBA courses : 30000 - 85000 Swiss Francs
  • MS courses : 3000 - 13,000 Swiss Francs

In addition to the cost of study, a student has other expenses to take care of while studying in Switzerland. On an average, the food, accommodation, commutation, tuition and other miscellaneous expenses would cost anywhere between 1250 Swiss Francs to 1800 Swiss Francs per month.

The living expenses will vary depending on the lifestyle chosen, place of accommodation, among other things. For instance, in Zurich the monthly average cost of living would be around 1560-2300 Swiss Francs, while in Basel monthly average will be around 1150 to 1350 Swiss Francs.

The cost of accommodation in Switzerland is higher as compared to the other European countries. The average housing cost will usually range between 600 Swiss Francs to 700 Swiss Francs.

Every month, the minimum spending on the food for a student will be around 210 to 240 Swiss Francs.

For transportation, students have an option of taking up a monthly transportation pass that can cost between 50-210 Swiss Francs. In most of the cities like Zurich, Geneva and Bern, public transportation tickets are usually valid for buses, trains and trams.

In addition to food, accommodation and transportation costs, the cost of books and supplies can be around 105 Swiss Francs per month.

Switzerland is not one of the countries that offers free education to students, neither domestic nor international. However a lot of universities offer scholarships that are usually able to cover the students’ tuition fees. The grants and scholarships are usually quite generous.

Some of these scholarships from some of the well known education institutes in Switzerland are as follows :

Students who come from non EU/EFTA countries are required to apply for a Swiss student visa. Indian students planning to study in Switzerland are required to apply for the Swiss National Visa D. It is advisable to apply for the student visa at least 3 months before the start of the university programme. After the application, it takes about 56-84 for the decision to come.

Visa appointments can be scheduled online through a visa application centre for the embassy of Switzerland in India. Visa application documents and students’ biometrics are usually required during the application process. A student may have to undergo a visa interview too. A student can stay in Switzerland during the entire degree programme on The Swiss National Visa D. After the degree is over and if the student wants to extend the stay in the country, a different visa would be required.

The Swiss National Visa D application fees is 67 CHF and service fee of about 20 CHF. Indian students are not required to get health insurance for the Swiss student visa.

International students can work part time, upto 15 hours per week while studying and full-time during holidays, provided they have been living in Switzerland for at least a period of 6 months.

Switzerland has a large number of immigrants and nearly quarter of its population is foreigners. If anyone wants to stay longer than 3 months in Switzerland, a Swiss residence permit is required. This is regardless of the nationality.

The Swiss Permanent Residence Permit (Permit C) however cannot be applied during the first visit to the country.

Usually, the first time you apply for a PR, you will receive either a Permit B or a Permit L, both of which are issued for a duration of 1 year. Permit B can be renewed yearly however Permit L can be renewed only once.

  • The EU/EFTA member country nationals can get a Swiss PR permit after living in Switzerland for 5 continuous years, while for the non-EU/EFTA member country nationals to apply for a Swiss Permit C, they must have been living in Switzerland with a Permit B for 10 continuous years. In some exceptional cases, non-EU/EFTA nationals can get their Swiss PR permit in 5 years.

In order to be eligible for the Swiss Permit C there are certain requirements to be fulfilled. Some of them include to be able to speak the official language, clean criminal record, no debts, a record of healthy employment etc
